Abstract

|
This retrospective study of 12 patients was designed if diagnostic laparoscopy is valuable in decreasing the non-therapeutic laparotomy of advanced malignancies and in assessing the patient with equivocal conditions of intra-abdominal pathology
or
injury.
One of 5 patients of advanced stomach cancer could avoid undergoing unnecessary laparotomy according to the laparoscopic finding. 3 patients showing equivocal clinical findings of appendicitis were confirmed by diagnostic laproscopy as following:
PID;
ovarian cyst; Meckel's diverticulum
In summary, 7 patients(58.3%) underwent diagnostic laparoscopy and laparotomy and authors performed laparoscopy for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment in 3 patients(25%). 2(16.7%) patients(one metastatic malignancy & one small sized ovarian
cyst)
underwent diagnostic laparoscopy only.
Authors suggest the followings; First diagnostic laparoscopy is available to decrease the non-therapeutc laparotomy especially in advanced malignancy. Second, laparoscopy is one of the safe and accurate methods in assessing the patients with
equivocal
and vague findings. Third, There are "Bling-points" of laparoscopy such as lesser omental sac, retroperitoneum and diaphragm(posterior part).
